Freedom to Be
Freedom to Be; Many people including teens think that ‘freedom’ is about fulfilling desires and doing whatever they want with little regard of how their actions affect themselves or others.
True ‘freedom’ is about discipline. Now this may sound harsh or corny, however you need to know what level of mind you are coming from. When one just blindly follows the senses of the ‘lower mind’ for self-gratification this can leave a tendency for the mind to attach itself to the very thing one may be desiring, and too much attachment can lead to addiction of some sort or another. Attachments can make you lose your freedom. You cannot move freely when you are encumbered with life burden. Less luggage, more comfort, is a slogan for the journey of life. Reduce desires, loosen attachments, and win more freedom.
Know your mind
Get to know your mind. Minds in general tend to lean towards the negative. This is where discipline comes into play. When you know how to observe the difference between ‘higher mind’ and ‘lower mind’, you have true freedom, real freedom to choose. Higher mind tends to be able to reason, it has the ability to discriminate, and it knows what is good for itself and what is not. It can discriminate between what is an ‘opinion’ and what is fact. Higher mind empowers you while lower mind dis-empowers. Using the higher mind, you take command; lower mind wants to control you.
Some qualities of ‘Higher Mind’ Courage, Neutrality or equanimity, Willingness, optimism, inspiration, Acceptance and Reason, Caring, Kindness, sharing.
Some tendencies of ‘Lower Mind’ Ego, Pride, Indifference, Ignorance, Anger, Excessive desire or craving, jealousy and selfish, Fear and anxiety, Despondency, despair, shame or despising, Guilt and blame, miserable, Victim, poor me, no choice, helpless, self-pity, Depression or morbid and one never wants to go below this, though many do.
Test for depression
Though there are many types of tests for depression, the quickest self-test is to ask yourself where you feel your energy is resonating at the above ‘lower mind tendencies’. See it in terms of energy rather than ‘I am this or that person’. It is very easy to change the energy in an upward direction and this changes everything automatically. I want you to realize there is energy in your words and thoughts, so think wisely and positively when you speak, do it in the friendliest manner possible and you will notice an almost immediate uplift of feeling towards your well-being.
Instruments of joy
You can have all the instruments of joy and contentment in your possession. When you are miserable it is due only to your way of thinking, the habits you have developed, and the attitudes that are keeping you feeling this way. When you learn how to change the attitudes of the lower level energies to the positive and higher energy attitudes then you’re on the road of using the inner instruments of joy and contentment. When you are torturing yourself it is because there is a vitamin deficiency and the vitamins needed are, being true to yourself. Do the right or best thing for yourself and to love your-self within, more and more. Do this and recover. Let these vitamins assimilate into character and conduct yourself in a way that doesn’t enslave you towards the negative habits. You will shine with fine mental and physical health.
One little tip
One little tip, never use the word ‘try’, you cannot try anything, either you do it or you don’t. It is far better to use the word ‘best’. When you have the attitude of doing your ‘best’ in any endeavor your energy levels immediately raise. The next move you can do is to ‘better you best’, and with some practice change will take shape. So learn to run your own race, compete against yourself and better your best in manageable steps.
